VICTORIA, B.C., September 2026 — Victoria author Cynthia H. Andrew is turning a deeply personal chapter of her life into a story about resilience, education, and finding the courage to reclaim your future.
Her debut young adult novel, Through the Rain, She Blooms, will be released September 22, 2026. Set in 1991 and based on Andrew’s own experiences and perspectives, the novel follows fourteen-year-old Jennifer Sawyer, a girl looking forward to her first year of high school when an encounter with an older boy changes the course of her life.
After Jennifer becomes pregnant following a sexual assault, she confronts far more than an unexpected pregnancy. Shame, judgement, family expectations, lost friendships, and decisions about her education and future begin closing in around her. At an age when she is only beginning to discover who she is, Jennifer must learn to find her own voice in a world where everyone seems to have an opinion about what should happen next.
At the heart of the novel is a question that remains relevant more than three decades later: Who gets to decide a young woman’s future?
Education becomes an important part of Jennifer’s journey. After her traditional high school views her pregnancy as a problem to be managed, she enters an alternative education program where young women are offered academic support, counselling, life skills, childcare, and the opportunity to continue their education. The contrast raises broader questions about what happens when vulnerable young people are judged or excluded, and what can happen when they are instead given practical support and a path forward.
The story also examines how attitudes toward pregnancy, education, and women’s choices can pass from one generation to the next. Jennifer’s mother also became pregnant as a teenager and was unable to finish high school. As Jennifer fights to preserve her own future, she begins to see her mother’s life differently, recognizing the dreams and opportunities another generation of young women was expected to leave behind.
Although written as a coming-of-age novel, Through the Rain, She Blooms opens conversations that extend well beyond young adult fiction. The book explores consent, sexual assault, shame, teen pregnancy, mother-daughter relationships, access to education, and the importance of allowing girls and women to speak about experiences they may have been taught to carry in silence.
For Andrew, telling the story is also about giving women a voice and reminding readers that one traumatic experience does not have to determine the course of an entire life.

Andrew’s story does not present resilience as easy or immediate. Jennifer’s path is complicated, painful, and uncertain. But as she begins building a life beyond what happened to her, the novel ultimately becomes a story about possibility and the right to imagine a future again.
The book’s message is reflected in its title: storms cannot always be avoided, but growth can still come from difficult ground.
